Wilson's sister, Angela Wilson, said she accepted Hennard's apology in court and he expressed remorse, according to the Associated Press.
"He has a lot of remorse but it's more an emotional thing because of all the things that have gone on," she said. "So he doesn't have that right now to make bad decisions."
"There has been a lot of people coming out. It takes time. There's no easy answer," she said.
Ronda Wood, Wilson's sister, spoke of how her brother's death had affected Wilson's family.
"No justice for my brother," she told family and friends. "He was in every facet of our life."
"The only thing I can say to the family is: You've suffered enough."
Wilson's mother, Beverly Moore, was at the meeting but declined to speak reporters.
Hennard also called Wilson's family to apologize.
Defense attorneys said Hennard had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic because of "multiple histories" mental problems dating back to his teen years. They suggested that psychiatrists should explain the context for his statements and whether he was being targeted.
"The facts of this case do not justify an extreme sentence including any of the charges" Hennard was convicted on, prosecutor Kevin Wilson said in his opening statement.
